Ukiyo-e

Woodblock Prints (Ukiyo-e)

Woodblock prints have been used for a wide variety of purposes, including standalone artworks, decorative items, and illustrations for books and magazines.

Among these, Ukiyo-e from the Edo period is the most renowned. Ukiyo-e depicted the daily lives and customs of ordinary people. Thanks to advanced woodblock printing techniques, these works could be mass-produced, making them affordable and highly popular among the general public.

An Ukiyo-e print is created by carving an artist’s design into a wooden block and then printing it onto paper. This was a revolutionary technology at the time, as a single woodblock allowed for hundreds of identical, high-quality prints to be produced.
