Ehon Suikoden (Illustrated Water Margin) by Katsushika Hokusai
Ehon Suikoden is an illustrated book by the renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, based on the famous Chinese novel Water Margin (Suikoden).
The story follows the adventures of the 108 heroes of Liangshan Marsh, whose bravery and rebellious spirit made the tale extremely popular in Edo-period Japan. Hokusai depicted these legendary warriors with dramatic compositions, expressive figures, and highly detailed costumes and weapons.
The work demonstrates Hokusai’s remarkable skill in warrior imagery and historical illustration, and it played an important role in the popularity of Water Margin themes among later ukiyo-e artists, including Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
