This ukiyo-e warrior print depicts the famous Fuji no Makigari (Great Hunt at Mount Fuji) organized by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, in 1193.
The event was more than a hunting expedition; it served as a grand gathering of samurai retainers and a demonstration of Yoritomo’s political authority and military power. The hunt is also closely associated with the legendary revenge of the Soga brothers, one of the most celebrated stories in Japanese warrior literature.
